Strategies for Detecting Difference in Map Line-Up Tasks

چکیده
The line-up task hides a plot of real data amongst decoys built around some plausible null hypothesis. It has been proposed as mechanism for lending greater reliability and confidence to statistical inferences made from graphics. proposition is seductive one, but whether or not line-ups guarantee consistent interpretation structure an open question, especially when applied representations geo-spatial data. We build on empirical work the extent which can be reliably judged in map line-ups, paying particular attention strategies employed making judgements. conducted in-depth experiments with 19 graduate students equipped moderate background geovisualization. consisted series tasks two designs: choropleth maps centroid-dot alternative. chose challenging hope exposing participants’ sensemaking activities. Through structured qualitative analysis think-aloud protocols, we identify six evaluate their effects judgements line-ups. find five applicable most visualization types, one that seems designs. could single successful strategy, users adopt mix different strategies, depending circumstances. also found were easier use than maps.

Matching-Based Allocation Strategies for Improving Data Locality of Map Tasks in MapReduce
MapReduce is a well-know framework for distributing data-processing computations on parallel clusters. In MapReduce, a large computation is broken into small tasks that run in parallel on multiple machines, and scales easily to very large clusters of inexpensive commodity computers. Before the Map phase, the original dataset is first split into chunks, that are replicated (a constant number of ...
متن کاملScale-up Strategies for Membrane-Based Desalination Processes: A Review
Membrane-based technologies have increasingly been chosen in desalination processes, which is evidenced by the increase of large-scale plants constructed in recent years. Indeed, several appropriate strategies should be considered to minimize problems faced during the construction, such as membrane system designs, area requirement, energy requirement, operation and maintenance, and environmenta...
متن کاملDifference Map Readability for Dynamic Graphs
Difference maps are one way to show changes between timeslices in a dynamic graph. They highlight, using colour, the nodes and edges that were added, removed, or persisted between every pair of adjacent timeslices. Although some work has used difference maps for visualization, no user study has been performed to gauge their performance. In this paper, we present a user study to evaluate the eff...
متن کاملGlobal Surgery – Informing National Strategies for Scaling Up Surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa
Surgery has the potential to address one of the largest, neglected burdens of disease in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), especially in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery (LCoGS) has provided a blueprint for a systems approach to making safe emergency and elective surgery accessible and affordable and has started to enable African governments to develop n...
متن کاملFeedback Strategies for Interactive Learning Tasks
Modern information technologies increase the range of feedback strategies that can be implemented in computer based learning environments; however, the design and implementation of feedback strategies are very complex tasks that are often based more on intuition than on psychologically sound design principles. The purpose of this chapter is to present theoretically and empirically based guideli...
